Retinal pulse wave velocity (rPWV) - Highlight on the 4th Congress on arterial stiffness

The 4th Congress of the Society for Vascular Arterial stiffness of Germany-Austria-Switzerland eV (DeGAG) took place at hospital "rechts der Isar" in Munich on 28-29. September 2012. Technologies for measuring the pulse wave velocity (PWV) were a central component of the presentations and discussions of the society. Mr. Dr John Baulmann the 1st Chairman of the society in his opening speech already addressed the new way to capture the retinal pulse wave velocity using the IMEDOS technology.

In the session "Macro meets Microcirculation", chaired by Dr. M. Baumann and Dr. D. Baumgart, Prof. K. Kotliar proposed the method for measuring the retinal pulse wave velocity (rPWV) and first clinical results. He showed, that changes in rPWV are already detectable in patients with high-normal blood pressure.

The detection of retinal vascular parameters in the prevention of arterial stiffness was brought to the attention of the conference by Dr. H. Hanssen in the presentation "Effects of physical activities on vascular stiffness".

The participants of the meeting were mostly nephrologists, sports physicians, cardiologists and hypertension specialists. The high interest triggered by the presentation was especially felt by the employees of IMEDOS on their exhibition stand.
